  Problem Description and Importance to Social Work    Abortion is the medical practice of deliberately terminating a human pregnancy. Some common methods in which a termination is performed can be by early non-surgical methods where a combination of drugs is provided to stop of the development of the pregnancy or through more evasive and violent measures such as a vacuum aspiration. While these methods all carry the risk of causing severe and long-lasting physical health conditions for the woman involved, the purpose of this literature review was to examine the data as it relates to the psychological implications of terminating a pregnancy.    Additionally, through studying the emotional and psychological responses of women who have experienced abortions, social workers will have a better understanding of how to serve a client who may have experienced such a traumatic event. Also, with an increased knowledge of this practice, a social worker may be better equipped to advocate for the rights of the client and for the unborn child as well. With this wealth of information, a social worker can strive to offer clients the resources and education that are necessary in making informed decisions as it relates to reproductive health and family planning.    It is critical that social workers remain as unbiased as possible when dealing with such a controversial and highly divided issue in the professional realm.
